When it comes to camping, there is no more comfortable or luxurious way to do it than in a motorhome. But before you can get to the relaxation, you need to do a little bit of research about what class of motorhome you want. Maybe a big diesel-powered Class A feels right, or maybe you prefer a compact gas-powered Class B? What makes a Class C motorhome a Super C? Class A
The largest and best-equipped class of motorhome, a Class A motorhome offers luxury, comfort, and spacious designs. These giants are also referred to as “integrated” motorhomes, since the driving area is a part of the living space in either a separated section or as an open cab with swivel chairs. The front window of the cab on a Class A is incredibly panoramic, allowing you to see just about everything ahead of you and to your sides, which is good for both safety and scenery.
Class A motorhomes do tend to be the most expensive class and come with either gas or diesel powertrains, with diesel offering more power. The expense is worth it, however. The size of these RVs allows one or even two private bedrooms, bunks and fold-out furniture, kitchens with every amenity you can think of, a relatively spacious bathroom, and more, allowing parties of up to 6 people to stay in a Class A comfortably. The size and power also means you can probably tow a smaller, personal vehicle for day trips and errands.
However, the size and weight does have some drawbacks. Class A motorhomes are more difficult to drive and maneuver than other classes, so you’ll need to be extra careful and well-practiced with large vehicles of a similar type.
Class B
Class B motorhomes are the smallest and most compact class of motorhome. This means they’re the most economical choice, and they tend to be easier to drive than other classes. In terms of design and handling, Class B motorhomes are very similar to commercial vans—not surprising, given that they’re built on a commercial van chassis. Cabs in these models are semi-integrated as a cab with some separation for easy access to the cabin from the driver’s seat.
Though these models offer many of the amenities of their larger cousins, the smaller size often means a lack of water amenities like showers or bathrooms. Despite the lack of a water tank, a Class B is still great for small families or couples traveling together, or for anyone who lives the solo-camper lifestyle.
Class C
Class C motorhomes are also called “alcove” motorhomes, due to the small berth that hangs over the separate cab. These are the middleground class in terms of size, but they tend to be a bit more rugged given that they’re built on a truck chassis. Class C’s have a center of gravity similar to a regular passenger vehicle, making them far easier to drive than a Class A, and they’re more than big enough for a water tank, which gives them a one-up on Class B. The alcove above the cab can either be used as storage or an extra sleeping space, depending on the model.
Super C
A heavier, stronger version of the Class C model is called the Class Super C. These tend to be diesel-fueled and are capable of towing heavy payloads, including your personal passenger vehicle. This again allows you the freedom of a smaller vehicle for day trips or errands rather than having to lug your entire motorhome to the store.
In the end, which class of motorhome you choose will depend on the typical group you’ll be carrying, your storage and appliance needs, and how comfortable you are with driving larger vehicles.
