Budget Your RV Trip
A great place to start is figuring out how much you plan to spend on this trip, which will dictate everything from how often you can eat out to how many nights you can stay at a campsite. Remember to budget all aspects of your trip including food, souvenirs, entertainment, gas, propane, and other smaller purchases (they really do add up). It also helps to set aside emergency funds in case you encounter issues on the road, such as a performance problem that requires a mechanic visit.
Build Your Route
Next, you’ll need to coordinate how you are getting to your destination. There are two schools of thought here. Some travelers prefer to take the shortest route so that they can enjoy more time at their destination. Other travelers enjoy taking the scenic route and making the journey an experience of its own. Both mindsets have merit; it’s all about personal preference.
As you consider which route to take, you’ll need to keep your RV in mind. A heavy RV on winding roads with high winds may not be the best combination. Some routes don’t allow RVs or can’t logistically accommodate them, either from roads being too narrow or bridges being too low. Building your route in advance helps you account for these details so you don’t end up needing to take a massive detour that derails your trip.
Keep in mind that you’ll eventually need to stop somewhere for the night. Maybe you’re traveling for a few days or maybe it’s a straight shot to your destination. Either way, you’ll want to book your lodging in advance. The most popular campsites will tend to book out weeks (or even months) in advance, so you’ll want to put in your reservation early. You may even get an early bird discount, which can help save you money.
Pack For Your Trip
Once you know where you’ll go and what you’ll do, the next step is to pack everything you’ll need for a successful trip. Packing an RV is a bigger undertaking than other types of travel since you’re essentially preparing a small home. That’s why packing lists can be so valuable. It’s easy to forget something whether it be fresh sheets or cleaning supplies. Making a list helps ensure you remember everything that needs to go into the RV and lets you cross off the items when they make it onto your RV.
Prepare Your RV
Once your grand adventure is planned, make sure your RV is ready to make the journey. Give it an inspection to ensure everything is functioning properly, from the lights to the tire pressure levels. Top off any fluid levels that are low. It also doesn’t hurt to go for a quick test drive to ensure your RV turns, brakes, and accelerates without issue.
