Pick a Destination

Start by deciding where you’re going to go. If there’s a place you’ve been dying to see or a group of places you want to stop, then planning your trip around that can be an easy way to make some basic decisions. For example, it can help you book the right number of campsites for the right number of days. This is going to be important because during camping season, many campgrounds will be tight on space and leaving things until the last minute may leave you without a place to park your RV.

Plan your Route

When you know where you want to go, it’s time to figure out how to get there. This can help you accomplish a few things. Firstly, it’ll help you choose what kinds of routes you want to take. Some people prefer the straight and narrow freeways while others may want to explore a scenic route.

Secondly, you’ll be able to decide where you’ll be stopping each night to help you make those important campsite reservations. And finally, knowing your route can help you search the cities you’ll be passing ahead of time to see if there are any particular attractions you’d be interested in stopping to see.

Packing

One of the more pressing issues that people tend to stress over is packing. When it comes to RV travels, you’ll be faced with a particularly gnarly problem: you’ll need to pack a lot of things. Sure, you’ll have more storage room, but there’s still a limit and that doesn’t help you figure out what to pack.

We recommend you start keeping track of items you use regularly and glancing around your home for commonly used items. Consider if you’ll need these over your trip. And we mean looking everywhere, because you’re going to want items like dishware, cooking utensils, and linens, things you probably wouldn’t pack for a car trip. If you need additional help, look for apps specifically designed for helping RV trippers pack. They often provide blank lists or pre-made ones to help you get started.

Preparing your RV

Also make sure your RV is ready to roll before you hit the road. Do a complete inspection of your rig, checking every nook and cranny for any sign of repairs that may need to be addressed before leaving. You may even want to consider taking it in to a professional to inspect the parts you can’t see, like the drivetrain on a motorhome. It’s better to find out close to home there’s an issue, rather than break down in the middle of nowhere and scramble to figure out what to do next.

This should hopefully get you started, but each vacation is going to be slightly different. You may find you need to cater your approach depending on what you want to do or where you want to go. Just don’t forget through all this planning to have fun! RV camping is exciting and we want you to enjoy every minute of it.
