Over-Prepare
As you pack, it’s helpful to keep this mantra in mind: over-prepared is better than under-prepared. This is even truer when traveling with kids. Bring more clothes than you think you’re kids will need so that you’ll be prepared if clothes get unintentionally dirty. It also helps you be prepared for a range of temperatures. Pack along a first aid kit with plenty of medications to be ready for any bumps, bruises, or stomach aches that may happen on the road. This should include fever and cough medication, painkillers, ointments, bandages, sunscreen, and bug spray. Don’t forget to bring any prescription medications your family uses.
Food
Food is an essential part of your RV trip. It’s too expensive (and unhealthy) to eat out every meal. Plus, if you’re staying at a remote campsite there might not even be restaurants nearby. You’ll want to stock your RV with plenty of snacks and food for meals.
Meal planning helps you pinpoint what you’re going to make for each meal. This can help ensure you use all your groceries before the produce spoils. A great tactic is to double recipes so that you can enjoy leftovers for a meal the next day. Why cook twice when you can instead cook once and get two meals? Another strategy is to take advantage of freezer meals. You can cook before your trip, freeze the meal, then simply thaw and reheat it on your trip to save yourself some cooking time!
Toiletries
Everyone in the RV needs to pack along their required toiletries. But why bring along a massive bottle of shampoo when you are only traveling for a few days? Instead, opt to use travel-sized toiletries. You can either buy your normal products in a small travel size or buy travel-sized containers that you then fill with the product. This lets you bring along everything you need without taking too much space.
Tools
Even the highest quality RV can still encounter maintenance issues over time due to wear and tear. Not all issues merit an expensive trip to the mechanic. By packing a set of tools on board, you’ll be prepared to handle minor issues that crop up as you travel. These can range from squeaky doors to tires needing a higher air pressure. Build yourself a toolkit that includes duct tape, a hammer, a multi-purpose tool, and a tire pressure gauge.
A Taste of Home
It’s exciting to be on the open road, but it can also make you miss the comforts of home. Kids can get homesick, even if you are only gone a few days. Changing up their normal routine, especially for younger kids, can be stressful. Bringing along items that remind them of home can make traveling easier. These can include favorite toys and blankets, favorite snacks, favorite outfits, or even favorite activities (such as football or art). You can also decorate your RV with touches of home, such as photographs of friends.
