How to Cook on a Boat

If you’re planning a day trip out on open waters, you’ll definitely need to pack some grub to help keep everyone full while hanging out on deck. However, preparing food on a boat is very different from cooking at home. To ensure you don’t go hungry while cruising the waters, we recommend checking out our helpful cooking tips below.

Choose a Recipe

It’s a bad idea to simply pack ingredients into a cooler and hope you’ll be able to make them into a delicious meal when you’re ready to start cooking. Preparing a meal on a boat will take quite a bit of prep and planning to ensure you have all the ingredients and tools required for the job. That’s why we advise choosing a recipe in advance. If possible, we encourage you to keep your meal simple and straightforward, and we recommend researching cold meal options if your boat doesn’t have an available heat source.

Gather Tools

You’ll need a variety of tools on hand to successfully prepare a meal on your boat. While requirements will vary depending on your chosen recipe, you’ll likely need a kitchen knife, cutting board, plates, and utensils on hand, as well as a pan and hot plate if you plan on making a hot meal aboard your boat. Don’t forget to also bring a cooler onboard to help store your drinks, ingredients, and any leftovers you may have after everyone has eaten.
