Lightweight gear is usually all you need to stay comfortable and protected from the elements if you only plan on being out for a couple of hours. Ponchos, hats, and light jackets are easy ways to stay dry in muggy conditions. This outerwear is light enough that it doesn’t bog you down or get in your way and affordable enough to always have ready to go. However, light gear won’t do much against more extreme conditions or long-term exposure.
Rain Gear
Day-long excursions and rough waters require something a bit more if you want to stay comfortable. Heavy protection is a good investment for anyone who wants to be prepared for rain and wind without it turning them back to shore. Rain gear tends to be made out of PVC with welded seams to keep water from getting through, but it’s a bit more expensive and weighs more than lighter apparel.
Coastal Waters
Sometimes it seems like the ocean wants to drop as much water as possible right into your boat, so it’s a good idea to be ready for the right gear. Anyone who spends all day going up and down the coast will appreciate tight seals around collar and wrist. Open Waters
This stuff is for the saltiest of sea dogs who spend more time on the water than they do on dry land. Offshore apparel is of course waterproof and insulated enough to keep wearers nice and warm even when a cold wind cuts to the bone. You won’t be so encumbered that you can’t move, and an array of adjustable flaps, collars, and seals reinforce joints and layers protection where you want it most. Despite being heavy, breathable material will keep your mind on the adventure and out of the water.
