Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Fifth wheels are big heavy RVs, which means that their tires are put under enormous pressure. When your tires fail, you can wind up doing damage to your RVs chassis, your truck, or worse. A tire pressure monitoring system allows you to keep on top of your tire health by providing you up to the minute information on tire pressure and temperature. These systems will also track your tire over time, letting you know if you’ve got a slow leak, a fast leak, or are experiencing other unsafe conditions so that you can get yourself into a RV repair shop before things get any worse.

Emergency Radio/Charger

If the power goes out on your trip, you may feel pretty isolated. It’s a good idea to have a hand crank emergency radio around. A hand crank radio helps to break your dependence on electric hookups so you can get emergency information about a passing storm when the lights go out. These devices are also often all in one emergency kits, including a flashlight, and in many cases a USB port so you can get enough juice in your smartphone that you can make an emergency call or send a text.

Fire Extinguisher

Accidents happen, mistakes get made, and sometimes when you travel, you’ll have to deal with fire. In a fifth wheel, it’s a good idea to have several fire extinguishers on hand in case of emergencies. Placing one in the kitchen is always smart but make sure it’s not packed in the bottom back drawer, ease of access is key. Likewise, having an extinguisher in an easy to access outside storage compartment allows you to respond quickly when the campfire gets out of hand, or the barbeque master gets distracted from his duties.

Surge Protector

Fifth wheels are loaded with plenty of awesome appliances so protect them using a surge protector. These devices are generally waterproof, and store easily along with your normal power hookup cables. A surge protector is a stopgap between your RV and a potentially faulty powerbox, protecting your devices in the case of a short so you don’t wind up paying to fix all of your RVs electronics.

Trailer Brake Controller

Fifth wheels are big, heavy, and carry plenty of momentum on the road. When you’re bringing your RV to a halt, you want to know that your control input is making it to the brakes, which is where a trailer brake controller comes in. These devices synchronize the brakes of your truck with the brakes of your fifth wheel to help you get the smooth driving experience you want without compromising the health of your RV.
