No one especially enjoys doing chores on vacation, but when you’re living the RV lifestyle, tasks like laundry become something of a necessity to make sure your trip goes smoothly. You can save on packing if you stick to a few sets of clothing that launder easily. You’ll have to find a place to do laundry, since not many RVs come with washers or dryers, and if they do, they might be very small and therefore insufficient to do your whole family’s laundry quickly. To help you get laundry out of the way so you can go back to enjoying your trip, RVs and Boats For Less of Chubbuck, Idaho, has made this quick guide to help you analyze all your options and determine which one is the best for you.
Off-Site Laundromats
Laundromats are pretty easy to find when you’re traveling and they make short work of a few loads of laundry while you’re on the road. You’ll want to head there if you have a lot of dirty beach towels and swimsuits to launder after a beach trip or swimming excursion. The only things you’ll need are your own detergent, dryer sheets and plenty of quarters for the machines. Some RV campsites even have machines on-site so you won’t have to travel far with your basket of clothes. Truck stops also frequently have laundry machines on-site if you find yourself at one for an hour or two.
Portable Washing Machines
Small portable washers are available that store easily on your RV and help you get small loads done. You won’t be able to do an entire week’s worth of laundry for multiple people, but if you’re washing clothes for one or two people and you don’t have a big load, you can get them washed easily in a portable machine. This saves you time since you can do it on your RV instead of locating a laundromat.
Washing By Hand
Hand-washing is always an option, albeit a somewhat tedious one. Not everyone has the patience or skill to hand wash clothing, but it does save wear and tear on your clothes and involves no outside machines. It’s a good option if you’re boondocking or just don’t want to find a laundromat, and all you need is a little detergent and a large tub to fill with water. A clothesline can be set up when you’re camping to allow your clothes to dry naturally in a sunny breeze.
RV Washer/Dryer Units
If you’re fortunate enough to have a washer and dryer on your RV, you’ll want to be careful with how you use them. Some RVs offer space and hookups for a stackable unit or for a two-in-one machine that washes and then dries. Doing smaller loads will require less water and put less strain on your machines and your RV in general. You may have to do laundry every day or two instead of letting it all pile up into several loads that would be taxing and take hours to launder. Split up your laundry over a few days’ time and try to wear clothes more than once to ensure you’re getting as much use out of the as possible, then wash only what you absolutely must.
