If you’ve recently purchased your very first camping trailer, you may not realize that you’re missing a few important accessories for your new rig. However, there’s no need to panic. Below, we’ve compiled a short list of the most important items and tools you need for your new trailer, so you’re ready to hit the open road once RV season arrives.
Towing Accessories
Before you drive off into the sunset with your new trailer, you’ll first need to purchase a few helpful towing accessories for your rig. To start, we strongly recommend purchasing a handy set of tow chains to ensure your trailer doesn’t roll away or smash into the back of your vehicle if the hitch happens to fail. To be sure that it doesn’t, you can also purchase a helpful pin lock for your hitch as an extra precaution. Finally, don’t forget to locate a few handy sway bars while you’re at the store. These will keep your trailer from moving from side to side as you drive, and keep your model from tipping over when you need to make sharp turns.
Safety Accessories
You never know when you’re going to be caught in an emergency, so it’s best to always be prepared. Before you leave your driveway with your new trailer in tow, make sure you have a fully stocked first aid kit on your rig, as well as some nonperishable food and water bottles. You’ll also need to have a set of jumper cables, an empty gas canister, and a spare tire for your trailer on hand, just in case of a breakdown. It’s also not a bad idea to have a few basic tools nearby—such as a screwdriver, pliers, and a wrench— to allow you to repair your model just long enough to get to the nearest mechanic’s shop.
